The irony of Barber’s Point Lighthouse lies in the fact that it was built to honor the man whose failure proved why the lighthouse was needed. In 1796, Captain Henry Barber (British sea captain and maritime fur trader) crashed his ship, the Arthur, onto the very coral shoals where the lighthouse now stands. In addition to serving as a history lesson, Barber’s Point is also famous for being the geographic host to Germaine’s Luau, which is situated at Kalaeloa (“the long point”). Despite standing in contrast to typical residential communities on the island, there are homes around Barbers Point. Large portions of the former Naval Air Station have been converted into civilian townhome-style rental neighborhoods like Kalaeloa Rental Homes. Additionally, developers are currently building new single-family homes and townhomes, such as the Ka‘ulu community.
